ON THE MAP FRAME
you can find both modern and historical all-around geographical and themed maps of Estonia and of the world. First up is a facsimile from duke L. A. Mellin’s „Liivimaa atlas“. Published in the years 1798-1810, „Atlas von Livland und Ehstland – Atlas de la Livonie...“ collection contains 15 maps: general map and 14 district maps (4 Latvia and 10 on Estonian areas). Mellin’s atlas can be considered Estonian cartography’s top work of 18.-19. century, over 7000 estonian place names can be found there. Cities, churches, vicarages, boroughs, manors, cattle mansions and villages have all been included on the maps, along with rivers, lakes and springs. Wind-, water-, sawmills and brickworks are also present. An angel, bearing the coats of arms of Estonia and Livonia, decorates the general page of Mellin’s atlas. The pages that follow are illustrated by the coats of arms of cities along with cartouches decorated with city views.
THE MAP CABINET
contains pages of Estonian basemap, Estonian main map and Estonian sea map. Created in the 90s, the Estonian basemap (1:50 000) is based on satellite photos and contains so called „base information“ about Estonian territory, which can be used as a base for GIS and all sorts of theme maps.
Estonian main map (1:20 000) is a topographic map based on aerial photos, which presents in detail all the important off road objects, surface topography and place-names.
Marked on the sea map are navaids, buoys, line signs, blinkers, beacons, the depth of travelpaths, shallows, reefs, sunken ships. The info for sea maps changes constantly, due to storms carrying the sand around, contruction of new cable lines and so on, that is why the maps are constantly adjusted.
FOLDERS hold different smaller maps about specific regions: orienteering maps, hiking maps and so on.
AMONG BOOKLET MAPS you can find tourism maps, city maps and such of Estonia and other countries.
„The most beautiful museums are, after all, collections of maps... You can spend hours exploring their thickets of stripes and dots, mysterious as a starry sky, forgetting yourself in them as in the music of expanses.“ (F. Tuglas)
