Public lecture from the DG of ESA, mr Johann-Dietrich Wörner
The DG of the European Space Agency professor Johann-Dietrich Wörner (former head of German Aerospace Center DLR and the President of TU Darmstadt and Professor in civil engineering) gave an extremely inspirational speech at Tallinn University of Technology on September 15, 2016. More than 350 300 space enthusiasts gathered from Tallinn and Tartu.
In the lecture, Wörner emphesized many real connections between space technologies and real life applications, he explained satellite downstream services and integrated applications as well as numerous space-spinn-off technologies which have initially been developed for space, but are now available for free and waiting to be developed for terrestrial applications. He also told that quite surely people shall visit Moon again and soon also Mars, but the main quiestion is not when. "I do not support one way missions to Mars. We should be able to bring people also safely back to Earth" said Prof. Wörner. A very strong suggestion to a young people was a suggestion to dare to dream big and to start to fulfill your dreams by getting a former education.
After the public lecture, ESA delegation walked from TUT main building to the Innovation- and Business Centre Mektory, where both Estonian student satellite teams - TTU Mektory Sat and ESTCube teams gave a short presentation about the programmes. Both teams got a significant enthusiasm from the meeting with ESA DG.
After the visit of Tallinn Tech, ESA delegation headed to Stenbock house to meet with the Estonian prime minister Mr. Taavi Rõivas.
