The Competence Center kick-starts an international laboratories comparison
Laboratory of Fuel Technology of Oil Shale Competence Center of Tallinn University of Technology, is organizing a Proficiency Testing OSCC-PT-0119 for some of the quality indicators of oil shale matrix.
‘’For the sake of fair trade, best utilization of resources, and setting and monitoring of the international, regional, and local standards meant for well-being, measurements need to be reliable and internationally comparable,” explained Amer Al-Malahmeh, researcher of Competence Center. “Reliability and traceability can be established by showing a documented evidence, mostly by using a certified reference material. Comparability could be established when service, industrial and/or research and development laboratories, working with the same type of chemical measurements, participate in comparison testing, e.g. Proficiency Testing,” added Al-Malahmeh.

The aim of Poficiency Testing is to evaluate or demonstrate laboratories performance regarding the testing parameters in oil shale, which could be used to improve the quality performance by assessing the competence of laboratories (proficiency testing). Also allow comparison with the other laboratories within the oil shale industry and will be an indication of the comparability of global oil shale measurements. The score will be providing an answer on how your laboratory is performing to the quantitative requirement.
The testing will be conducted according to ISO 17043. The evaluation procedure will be consistent with the Statistical Methods for use in Proficiency Testing by inter-laboratory Comparisons ISO 13528:2015 and the IUPAC - international harmonized protocol for the proficiency testing of analytical chemistry laboratories:2006.
Today, 8 laboratories are already taking part in international Proficiency Testing. The Laboratory of Fuel Technology plans to start conducting proficiency tests on a regular basis.
