Miracles of Nanoelectronics Reliability in the IoT Era
The exponential growth over the last half a century of functionality, performance and complexity of computing systems has enabled today a new era in technology - the era of Internet of Things. However, the colossal inverted pyramid of IT services stands on the assumption of a reliable hardware backbone. It is getting extremely hard to keep the pyramid up due to downscaling of the implementation technologies that are reaching the physical barriers at the proximity of the atomic scale.
Today, we face the phenomena of nanoelectronics ageing and have to fight against bursts of random bit-flips by neutrons from galactic cosmic rays and alpha particles hitting from the chip packages as a result of radiation decay. Keeping reliability across the computing system layers in the IoT Era may seem to be nothing less than a miracle. Some of these miracles we create at TTÜ. Take for instance nanoelectronics rejuvenation.
