Working Hours and Leisure Time
Standard working hours of the full-time employee comprise 40 hours a week (teaching staff 35 hours a week). In the summer period (usually from 24 June to 20 August) the standard weekly working time is 4.5 hours shorter to all employees. Work days before national holidays continue to 12:00 noon. The lunch break of 30 minutes is excluded from the calculation of working hours. Christmas holidays are from 24 December to the end of the year while the basic salary shall be maintained.
In cases of sickness absence, an employee must notify the head of the structural unit of the absence due to illness as soon as possible. Estonian Health Insurance Fund pays sickness benefits on the basis of a certificate of incapacity for work, which the employee receives from his/her family physician and must then present to the employer.
Holidays. Annual holidays range from 35 calendar days to most non-academic staff to 56 calendar days to academic staff (exept for research workers with 42 calendar days). Annual holiday period shall be determined by a holiday schedule prepared according to the rules of work organisation of the employer and considering the employee's preferences, if possible (deadline 31 March). Upon agreement with the head of the structural unit, an employee can take additional holidays without maintaining basic salary.
Study holidays for staff shall extend up to 30 calendar days a year (at average basic salary for 20 calendar days). Employees will be given 3 duty free days in case of sickness, 3 additional duty free days are provided in case of getting married or death of a family member whereas the basic salary is maintained on those days.
